A graduate of the Universities of Manchester (BA Econ Hons) and East Anglia (MPhil), Professor Raban has held senior management positions at Sheffield Hallam University, Edge Hill and the University of Derby. His responsibilities in these posts have included academic development, quality management and the enhancement of academic practice. Most recently (in 2014/15), Professor Raban was employed on an interim basis as Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Greenwich.
Professor Raban has more than twenty five years' experience of providing consultancy services for higher education institutions and agencies in the UK, Europe, SE Asia, North America and the Middle East. He has served as an academic reviewer since 1994, initially with the English Funding Council and then throughout the UK with the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Colin has completed some 25 QAA audits, including overseas audits in Malaysia and the Republic of Ireland.
In 2010, Colin was granted the title of Emeritus Professor by the University of Derby for his 'remarkable contribution to the development of academic quality enhancement'. His areas of interest and expertise include:
Preparation for QAA educational oversight (REO), higher education review, institutional audit and degree awarding powers scrutiny.
The development, negotiation and management of higher educational partnerships
Transnational education and reconciling UK, US and other national systems for higher education
The development and implementation of innovative (including risk-based) approaches to quality management
Academic governance (committee and management structures, and regulatory frameworks)
The design and development of academic programmes.
